Dance Teaching Ideas: Harold and the Purple Crayon

We are back today with some great ideas to go along with the book "Herald and the Purple Crayon" by Crockett Johnson.

In todays printable we have given you 3 different lesson ideas.

Idea #1:Teach about the pathways that the purple crayon makes.

We have some really fun printable cards that you can hand out to your class that have different shapes that the purple crayon makes during the book. Your students will then try and make these shapes using purple masking tape on the floor. Students will then travel along the tape on the floor, just like Harold travels with his crayon in the book.

Idea #2:Dance through the book, using the adjectives and other descriptive words to determine how you should dance.

This idea is pretty basic, but there are some really great descriptive words in this book that tell us HOW Herald is traveling. I suggest reading the book once to the class and showing the pictures, and then read it a second time with everyone spread out in the room. (You may want to pause at certain moments to let your students really dance the movement.) This is a great practice in improvisation for your students and can help them get more comfortable moving their body.

Idea #3:Draw and then dance your own journey through the day.

This idea is probably better suited for old students because it does require some abstract thinking. Here you will give each member of you class a large piece of paper and their own crayon, and they get to draw the journey of their day so far to get to dance class. (You can remind the students that they don't actually have to draw a scale map, but can draw physical and emotional ups and downs in their day.) After students are finished they will have made some pretty awesome abstract art. They will then use this art to inspire a solo including 3 shapes and traveling in the room.(There are more details about how to walk them through this on the printable for today.)

There was a new "Harold and the Purple Crayon" movie that came out on August 2nd, that perhaps some of your students have seen. You could compare and contrast the book and the movie, or just use these dance ideas as another way to bring the book to life.
